Mission Statement:
The literacy Team working together with teachers, parents and students is committed to promoting and enhancing quality literacy instruction by providing an environment that meets the unique needs of our students, developing the skills and attitudes for life-long literacy learning, and fostering the belief that all students can be successful!
Program Description:
The reading intervention programs adopted in the middle school reflect confirmed scientific research about literacy development, intervention, and the prevention of reading difficulties. The programs are designed to meet individual student needs by being accessible, flexible, and engaging. This instruction incorporates strategies, methods, and resources that ensure literacy success for all. The comprehensive approach to literacy includes the following:
· Explicit and systematic instruction of phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, and vocabulary skills
· Strong literature, language, and comprehension instruction that includes a balance of oral and written language
· On-going assessment that informs teaching and ensures accountability
· Proven intervention programs which provide support for students at-risk of failing to learn to read
Goals:
· Improved student learning to produce successful readers who participate in
society.
· Improved motivation to learn so that students will want to read because they are
good at it.
· Improved reading comprehension so that students feel confident and independent.
