| Fiction Book-Independent Reading Response | Book: Iron Thunder
By: Avi
The setting of my novel is on the warship called "The Monitor" during the civil war.
I used clues to help me figure out the time and place. An example of a clue that helped me determine the time is "It was a cold early evening in January 1862." A clue that helped me establish the place states "Being Captain Ericsson's boy-and now party of the crew-no one thought it odd my living on the Monitor." If I had the opportunity to live during this time period I would reject it. I would do this because the Civil War was a dangerous time for the U.S. and many lives were lost.

| Fiction Book-Independent Reading Response | Book: Amelia's War
Author: Ann Rinaldi
The novel takes place in Hagerstown, maryland during and a bit after the Civil War period - from early August 1861 to "Some Time After the End of the War, 1865". The times and places were directly stated in the story, so clues were not neccesary. I would not enjoy living in the period because of the dangerous and chaotic atmosphere. The main dilemma is that soldiers of different governments would come into the town and impose their varying brands of martial law. Another reason I would not accept an opportunity to visit the time period is that any expression of opinion opposite that of the curently occupying army would lead to arrest and/or destruction of personal property.

| Fiction Book-Independent Reading Response | The name of my book is AFTER. It takes place in Boston, Massachusetts in the present day. I know this because it often refers to places in Boston such as the Boston Museum of Science. The time period is present day and very clear because it often refers to cell phone usage and it discusses kids problems such as drinking and driving. I would like to live in this time period because I would be very familiar with kids behaviors and clothing styles just like I do today.

| Fiction Book-Independent Reading Response | Book: All the Way Home
Author: Patricia Reilly Giff
The place where this book takes place is Brooklyn NY. I know this because in the story it says, “The Dodgers might win the pennant this year.” This helps me know where it takes place because most people are fans of the team of where they live. The main character, Mariel, is a fan of the Brooklyn Dodgers. The time at which this book takes place is in the mid or early 1900s. In one scene they are playing baseball in the street. Currently there are too many cars in streets to be playing in them. The Dodgers is no longer a baseball team. Also there is a horse pulling the rag man’s cart. I think that I might enjoy living in this time because everyone seems very supportive. Mariel has polio yet everyone gives her a fair chance. Her care giver has pictures all over the house of her, plus Geraldine and Frankie both let her play ball.

| Fiction Book-Independent Reading Response | In my book, Bone by Bone by Bone, the setting's time of the story is in the 1940s, I know this because in the introduction of the story it says that David(the main character) was born in the 1940s. The place that this story takes place in is at the state of Tennessee, I know this because in the beginning of the story it tells you that David was born in the state of Tennessee. | |
| Fiction Book-Independent Reading Response | In my book, Bone by Bone by Bone, by Tony Johnston, the time of the setting is in the 1940s, I know this because in the beginning of the story it tells you that David, the main character, was born in the year 1940. The place of the setting is in Tennessee; I know this because in the beginning of the story it also tells you that David was born in the state of Tennessee. I would not enjoy living in the time that the main character David was born in because during his time there was a lot of racists who would try and kill anyone who was not white and all the different colored people who were not white would also be treated very differently and was hated by people wherever they went. | |
| Fiction Book-Independent Reading Response | The setting of my book, Dancing in Cadillac Light, takes place in a small town called Moon, Texas and it is during the summer of 1968. I know that because in the book they do not talk about computers at all, so I know that it is not in the present, but the author mentions cars and electricity, so I know that it could have taken place around forty years ago. Also, in the front of the book it told me what year it took place in. I know the story takes place in Moon, Texas because that is where the main character is from. I would like to live in that time period because it seems interesting to live in a time and place where people live simply without cell phones or many computers. | |
| Fiction Book-Independent Reading Response | The setting of my novel is probably between the 1910’s or 20’s because the author mentions that some people are in living slums, which I know happened somewhere in that time periods. I don’t think I would like to live in that time period because in the book a lot of the people are either really rich or really poor and if you are poor we most likely are living in dirty slums in a overcrowded city or area of the city. On the other hand living in that time period does have some good things about it too such as the fact that there are more jobs being created and more industries are being produced. That is the setting of my story and the period in which the story may take place. | |
| Fiction Book-Independent Reading Response | In the novel My Brother’s Keeper, the setting of the novel is in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania in1863, some clues that helped me determine the time and place of this book was to peer at the cover and see what date it was and where the story took place. I would not enjoy living in this time period because of the wars and sadness in America about slavery. It was a very hard time in history and the world was not a peaceful place. Also it was not safe because of all the fights and cannons being bombed. | |
| Fiction Book-Independent Reading Response | The setting of my novel is in a town called Shishole. Some clues I used to help me determine the setting is that the main character, Mick, goes to Shishole High. That helped me infer that the town is called Shishole. I wouldn’t like to live in this time period, because there are some corrupt things. First, some kids Mick knows drink, and get caught by the police. Also, where he goes to work out, his trainer offers him drugs.

| Fiction Book-Independent Reading Response | The setting in the book, I am Regina, is near present day Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania in 1755. I know this because the events that happen in the book like, Regina and her sister get captured by indians, they are also homesteaders. Also in the Foreword the author, Sally M. Keehn gives the year and the place. I wouldn't like to live in this time period because it sounds hard and dangerous because of the indians and the work the people had to do everyday. | |
| Fiction Book-Independent Reading Response | The setting of my novel is in 1893, and the place is most likely in the southern U.S. and Chicago. To get the Time, I looked at the front book-flap and saw the Time – it said “It is 1893…” To find the indirectly stated place, I had to take in context clues like the fact that they are in country and go to Chicago, so they likely went from southern U.S. to Chicago. I would not like to live in the time period presented because they didn’t have the kinds of technology and medicine they have now. Also, there is a war just 21 years from 1893, which means that I would likely be going to war, which I would not prefer to the conditions I am in now. | |
| Fiction Book-Independent Reading Response | What is the setting of your novel? What clues did you use to help determine the time and place of this book? Do you think you would enjoy living during the time period presented? Why or why not?
Number of the Stars:
The setting of my novel is in the beginning of the holocaust, when Hitler was taking/ finding all of the Jews and sending them to all of the different concentration camps. Some clues that helped my determine the time and place of this book was the Jewish star showed on the front cover of my book, also the different words, such as Jews, German soldiers, war, Hitler, concentration camps, hiding, etc. No, I would not enjoy living during the time period presented in this book because it wasn’t just if u were Jewish or not, it was if u looked Jewish, for instance having a big nose, or having the regular brown hair and brown eyes. Also it was kind of like the great depression, the electricity didn’t work, no heating, no water, very limited money supplied for the families, etc. so the reason why I would not like living in the time period presented is because a lot of people would be scared, and sad because of the separation of families, and for people at the concentration camps, the hurt, and scared feeling that it would bring them.

The setting of the novel Saffy’s Angel takes place In England during present times. The clues I used to find the place was context clues and to find the time I made a logical guess based on the book. I would enjoy living in this time period because it’s the time period I’m living in now and I enjoy the simple things to life nowadays

| Fiction Book-Independent Reading Response | My book: Give a boy a gun
The setting of my book is a modern day highschool. I know it is because it often makes states directly that it is a high school. Also, what made me think it is modern day is that one of the main characters Gary played video games often and had a website, both are modern technology. I would love to live in that time, seeing as I do.

| Fiction Book-Independent Reading Response | The setting of my novel is Red Bend, Wisconsin. Mainly at Schwenk Farm- this is D.J. Schwenk’s family’s farm. I know this because on page 1 of my book, it explains how none of her grandpas or great-grandpas could ever come up with a better name for their place than “Schwenk Farm”. I know the main setting of the novel is Red Bend because on page 6, the text states, “Red Bend is my town and my school.” The year is around today because the genre is realistic fiction; and the details in the story show that what’s happening could not have happened many years ago. I think I would enjoy living in this time period because I already do, and it sounds interesting.

| Fiction Book-Independent Reading Response | My book, "Tiger Tiger", takes place in Rome at about 100AD. I know this because the story makes references to events, such as Roman wars, and entertainment, like arena fighting, that existed only in the Roman day and age. Also it talks about the Roman class system, with slaves and gladiators at the bottom and caesars and nobility at the top. If given the chance, I would not want to live in Ancient Rome, because near the bottom of the class system life would be brutal, and if I were near the top I would know that my comfort was derived from the misery of others.

| Fiction Book-Independent Reading Response | The book the “Racing the Wind-Dolphin Diaries” by Ben M. Baglio has a setting of South America and the probably present time. The clues I that I found in the book to determine the time and place is when the book says, “October 31-morining-the Caribbean” as the author’s characters diary starts. I think I would like to enjoy living in “this” time period because they are still wonders to see and they wouldn’t go extinct yet (animals). I would like to be in the shoes of Jody (the main characters) in this time period because she gets to see almost extinct marine wildlife and see gets to explore the world with her mom and dad for the research on the underwater creatures that they are specialists at dolphins and whales. | |
