MATERIALS LAB….Mr TOPAZIO
Course Description:….Materials Lab is primarily a “ Hands on “ woodworking experience, intended to give the student an enjoyable and safe exposure in the area of woodworking. Students in grade 6 through 8 are taught the SAFE and PROPER use of various handtools as well as machines such as The Radial Arm Saw, Band Saw, and the Drill Press. Student’s projects such as “ Toy Trains “ for the 6th graders all the way to Beautiful 40’ x 50’ Armoirs for select 8th graders. Students will meet for 8 weeks ( Quinta) except for band and chorus students who will meet 3 out of the 6 day cycle.
I. 6th Grade course outline:…..Students in the 6th grade will be exposed to the basics of woodworking. The first few days will be spent on Safety and the safe and proper use of handtools and machines. Main Project will be a real cute “ Toy Train “..Students will be required to use various handtools as well as selected Floor machines in putting together their Train. If there is sufficient time after their Train is complete , some smaller projects could also be done. Grading:.Students in the 6th grade are graded primarily on their work habits in the Material’s Lab. 6th grade is meant to be a period in the Lab where they get to feel comfortable in the surroundings and enjoy the fine craft of woodworking. Little emphasis is put on “ The Finished Product ‘ for grades but more towards their effort and listening skills,
II 7th Grade course outline:….Students in the 7th grade will again be given a 2 day orientation of Safety procedures and a brief overview of the course. Projects could include A “ Cranberry Picker” designed Magazine Holder, An old fashioned “ Picket Fence” designed Wall or counter Shelf, or a cute “ Swan” designed Plant Holder. Again like 6th grade students will be exposed to various hand tools as well as selected machines. Grading…. In the 7th grade grades will be determined on project completion. Areas of importance will be Neatness, Accuracy, class participation, and listening skills
III 8th Grade course outline….. Students in the 8th grade will take what they have learnedand experienced in the 6th and 7th grade ( proper safety practices, techniques and knowledge) and expand on these to construct a small piece of furniture ( Small End Table…magazine holder)..A selected number of students ( depending on experience ) will have the opportunity to design and construct a Beautiful, large “ Armoir”..they will work in groups of 2 or 3 and will know in advance, because of size and anmount of materials, only ONE can take it home.
