 Extra Credit Suggestions

Suggestions for Extra Credit Work

Generally speaking, extra credit work needs to be something that expands your science knowledge, understanding,  and/or skills.  It may also be educational or helpful to the other students, or to me.

How much credit something is worth is something you and I can discuss.  One category of XC work that is often done by students is finding a reference source (like a book or web page) that answers a question that I didn't know the answer to.  These are very similar to doing a night's homework, so I generally give XC of one homework assignment.  Independent projects, especially Science Fair Projects, Science Olympiad, Robotics Team, or Sound Off On Science Demonstrations can earn you considerable extra credit!

  • Make a working model of how the tires roll up-hill in the movie COG.
  • Do a Science Fair Project.
  • Do a "Sound Off On Science" independent project and present it during Sound Off On Science night.  (For less credit you can do a Demonstration project, or just help to set-up and run Sound Off On Science night.)
  • Find the answer to a question that came up in class that I didn't know the answer to.  Be sure to show me the book, article, web page, etc. where you found the answer.
  • Create a set of homework questions or problems related to the material we are currently covering.  Include the correct answers.  (Be sure your answers are actually correct!)
  • Create a game that can be used to review (or even teach) material we are currently covering.  [Ex.  A boy created a Jeopardy game using PowerPoint ]  Make sure your answers are correct!
  • Explain how we could test a myth in "MythBusters" style, or come up with a myth that we might test.
