Silver Cluster students will:
· self-select reading materials in line with reading ability and personal interest.
· read a wide variety of genres.
· summarize literary and informational text.
The process of selecting a text should involve the student and a parent or guardian. Students will need to record their independent reading selections on their reading log (located in document library). This log should be checked and signed by a parent or guardian. If a text is started but then not finished, it should still be listed on the log as unfinished with a brief reason (too difficult, too easy, too…). If an alternate log format is desired, such as a digital one, please ensure that all parts of the existing log are included in whichever alternate format is chosen.
Students should try to read books that are at an appropriate reading level. The majority (greater than 50%) of the books on the log should be at or above the student's reading level. One available measure for most students is to utilize the Lexile range reported from their MAP Reading tests. Students were given this information and it is also available in their in-class portfolios for reference. Students can also use a general guide line of 6th grade for appropriate texts.
Students should read at least 20 independently chosen texts over the course of the school year. These books need to include at least five separate fictional genres and three separate non-fiction genres. The log is checked once in January at the end of the second quarter, when at least 10 books need to have been read in order to meet the standard. The completed log is due in June.
