Homework: None
Wednesday 1/11/12
Today, students typed their procedural essays regarding how to focus a microscope. Tomorrow they will finish and print them out.
Homework: None
Tuesday 1/10/12
Today, students took the ecosystem quiz. Afterward, students read a new addtion of Current Science.
Homework: Food web due tomorrow.
Monday 1/9/12
Reviewed for quiz.
Homework: Study for quiz; food web due Wednesday.
Friday 1/6/12
Today, students received their ACE scores regarding the owl pellet dissection. Students scoring below an 80 will be redo the ACE in Monday's fast class. Also, the food web project was introduced, and we began to review for Tuesday's ecosystem quiz.
Homework: Quiz Tuesday, food web project due Wednesday.
Thursday 1/5/12
Today, students learned about the feeding relationships of different organisms in our local, salt marsh ecosytem. They used this information to create a rough draft of a saltmarsh food web.
Homework: Complete the two column notes study guide on ecosytems. Quiz Tuesday
Wednesday 1/4/12
Today, students took the second formative for the quarter. After, students worked on a food web packet. The last 15 minutes of class, students played a variation of the predator game. Instead of playing with a time limit, they played for points. The first team to reach 100 points won. Also, in this variation they created food chains and food webs with their cards.
Homework: Finish the food web packet.
Tuesday 1/3/12
Welcome back! Happy New Year!!! Today, we reviewed types of innate/learned behaviors, and food chains/feeding relationships. The second half of class, students finished the last round(s) of the predator game.
Homework: None
Friday 12/23/11
Today, students played the predator game involving feeding relationships found in a woodland ecosytem.
Homework: None - Have a great vacation!
Thursday 12/22/11
Today, we checked the animal Hibernation and Migration paper and Ecosytem Packet for points.
Homework: Complete Ecology Crossword Puzzle and Abiotic Adventure Puzzle
Wednesday 12/21/11
Today, students completed a paper on animal migration. Also, they received a packet on ecosystems and feeding relationships within ecosystems.
Homework: Finish Ecosystem Packet
Tuesday 12/20/11
Today, we learned about innate vs. learned behavior and completed our procedural essays.
Homework: Finish procedural and complete the hibernation questions only.
Monday 12/19/11
Today, we had short classes due to Business America. So, we worked a little more on the procedural essay explaining how to focus a mircroscope.
Homework: None
Friday 12/16/11
Today, we went over the answers to Current Science. Then, students began to write a procedural essay explaining how to focus a microscope.
Homework: None
Thursday 12/15/11
Today, we wrote and ACE response to the question - What animal was found in the owl pellet dissection? After, students finished the Current Science.
Homework: None
Wednesday 12/14
Today, we checked the Fish and Alien dichotomous keys as a class. Students then completed a dichotomous key identifying unkown tree species. After the assessment, students continued working on Current Science.
Homework: None
Tuesday 12/13
Today, we took the Classification Test 2.2. In two of the four science classes, everyone scored an 80% or higher. Way to go! After the test, students worked on the dichotomous key from the previous day. Also, if they had time, they could read the new edition of Current Science.
Homework: Finish Dichotomous Key (Freshwater Fish or Alien)
Monday 12/12
Today, we used the bones collected from the owl pellet dissection, especially the skull and mandible, to identify the animal captured by the barn owl. To do this, we followed a dichotomous key. Then, we made a claim to the animal we identified and supported the claim with evidence from the dichotomous key.
Homework: Test Tomorrow on classification. Study, Study, Study!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thursday 12/8
Today, we started with a review of the homework and learned that scientist use DNA as another means to help classify organisms. In addition, we began our owl pellet dissection. During the dissection, students removed as many bones as possible from the fur. They will use a dichotomous key and the bones, especially the skull and mandibles, to help identify the species of prey.
Reminder: Test Tuesday
Wednesday 12/7
Today, we continued to work on the classification pyramid and started the sketch of our featured organism. If students had time, they worked on the Venn diagram comparing the featured organism with another one in the same genus.
Also, students were introduced to dichtomous keys using one that identifies pictures of whales observed in the open ocean.

Special note: The quiz that was suppose to be Friday is now moved to Tuesday of next week.
Tuesday 12/6
Today we used Wildlife Fact File Cards to begin creating a classification pyramid. The classifcation pyramid is a pyramid that is upside down. This shows that the kingdom is the largest classification group, while the species is the smallest. Quiz Friday.
MONDAY 12/5
Today we read the article Chimps "R" Us and answered 7 questions related to the article in our scientist notebooks - if the questions were not answered, they need to be answered for homework. Second, we added to the video sheet, The Classification of Living Things, the three reasons scientist why scientist classify. Also, we filled in the Five Kingdoms Chart which covers the characteristics of each kingdom.
A short quiz will be given on Thursday. The two sheet need to study from are The Classification of Living Things video sheet and the Five Kingdoms Chart.
