| Current Science "Blog" | Well, here is our new classroom blog. You shouldn't get sidetracked by any background images or other distractions because it's pretty much black and white here. I feel very strongly about keeping you guys in touch with what's going on in the world and I know that you love technology. While it's a small step back, we are going to continue forward with our blog here. I will continue to post things going on in the world as they relate to science and our cluster. I am still working out the kinks with this thing, so be patient. You should be able to post on the discussion board...fingers crossed that it will be Razzmatastic! | |
| Indonesian Volcano | Mount Merapi, located in Indonesia, has been erupting for one week. There was some tectonic activity the previous week in Indonesia which included a 7.7 earthquake, followed by a tsunami. The volcano has been spewing hot ash and gases over the last several days and it has killed over 400 people. Lava has been reported at the crater of the volcano, but scientists do not know when the volcanic activity will subside. With all of these natural disasters happening, it has been difficult to provide aid to the affected areas.

| Sunscreen for Whales? | This is so astonishing to me!! You have to read this article and check out the pictures. So, they have found blue wales in the Gulf of California that are suffering from sunburn! The whales have to surface to breathe, feed, etc. and are exposed to intense solar rays. They strongly believe that this is linked to the depleting ozone layer. I know that global warming is a controversial topic for many, but this may be more evidence in support of the idea. And, if anything, it is a great reminder to the human population that we need to wear sunscreen too!

| Question of the Week | Sometimes there are classes where you have so many great questions. I try to answer all of them to the best of my ability. Sometimes, I don't know the answer and sometimes we don't have enough time to chat about these things. So, we'll be having a 'question of the week.' I will be asking you to submit questions that are puzzling to you. For example, "Why do we dream?" or "Why do we get a brain freeze when we eat something cold?" You will have all week to research the question and try and find the answer. This will be submitted on Friday for extra credit. Your answers MUST be typed, include your source of information, be in your own words, and have your name on it. Then, we'll spend a little bit of time in class discussing the answer, which, will lead to even more questions! I will post the question here on the website and then on Fridays I will post the answer. This should be fun! | |

| Question of the Week 1/17/2012 | Why are some animals cold blooded and some warm blooded? | |
| Question of the Week 1/17/2012 | Warm blooded animals are able to keep their body temperatures constant by generating heat in their bodies. Cold blooded animals change drastically because their heat source comes from outside of their body. Warm blooded animals can keep warmer because of the food that they eat and how they metabolize their food for energy. Cold blooded animals cannot do this get their heat from outside sources such as the sun.

| Question of the week: What Causes Waves? | Waves are caused by wind. As the wind blows, it causes ripples on the water. The longer and harder the wind blows can change the waves, as can how long a distance the wind blows.
