| Stick Figure by Lori Gottlieb | In the autobiography Stick Figure by Lori Gottlieb, the main character Lori faced many trials and tribulations. These include lying to her parents about eating lunch, convincing Jaclyn Smith that she was the victim, and also by attempting to cut out the fat in her stomach. These struggles help her to realize that she doesn’t have to change herself in order to be considered beautiful. Not eating at school, lying to a TV star, and cutting her stomach all lead up to the help and success that Lori gets throughout the entire book. This finally gets through to her and she realizes that she can accept herself for who she really is.
To begin, Lori’s worst nightmare was that she would gain weight, this is actually a disease called obesophobia. This state of mind makes both boys and girls feel so self-conscious about their weight that they don’t want to gain any; this goes on until they either get help or die of malnutrition. Thankfully Lori realizes her mistakes and got the help that she needed. Before she got her help, Gottlieb tried every single day not to eat and gain weight, she even had the obscene theory that if she sniffed “fattening” foods that she would breathe in the calories. During the school days when her parents weren’t around, Lori threw her lunch out. When she got to school she would go to the library during the lunch time, and when the librarians said “no eating” Lori would lie and say that she already ate it. Later on Gottlieb’s dad schedules Lori to meet with TV’s Jaclyn Smith (Charlie’s Angels), they go out to lunch and Lori is surprised to see that Jaclyn order a hamburger. Lori tells Smith that she isn’t on a diet per say but that she is just watching what she eats; this doesn’t faze Jaclyn in the least so she thinks there is nothing out of the ordinary. Moreover, when Lori is checked into a hospital for her anorexia she is told she needs to get up to at least fifty pounds. If this doesn’t happen the doctors would have to surgically insert a tube down her throat. When she is told this she makes a list, of reason to stay alive and reasons why she should kill herself. In the end she has more reasons to be dead than alive, so she takes a pair of scissors and stab her stomach, luckily she doesn’t kill herself. Soon after, Gottlieb gets the family help and support that she needs to get better and tries her hardest to reach a healthy weight.
Overall, Gottlieb’s struggle to gain weight resulted in her being pushed to the point of no return. When this happens it shocked her into getting the love and support of those who have been trying to help her all along, thus making her more confident in fighting against her disease. When Lori accepts the fact that she needs help, it sets her up to get better, and overall get healthier. With the help of family and friends Lori was able to go on in life and be a successful person, if she hadn’t gotten the necessary support she probably wouldn’t be alive today. Lori’s lies to her family about her lunch, her lies to Jaclyn Smith and her attempted suicide were all obstacles that Gottlieb had to overcome in order to save her own life in the end. Today she is now an esteemed author of a New York Times Bestselling book Stick Figure.

| NON-FICTION - Biography/Autobiography | President Thomas S. Monson
For my non-fictional biography I read the book "To The Rescue, The Biography of Thomas S. Monson." He has had many accomplishments in his life. One of his big accomplishments was that he has received the highest honor in the World Organization of Scouting. This award is the Bronze Wolf Award. His greatest accomplishment though is being ordained the prophet of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. This is a great accomplishment because there have only been 16 prophets of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints since the churches organization in 1836.
Thomas S. Monson has gone through many trials in before he was ordained Prophet of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, and also during his time as Prophet of the church. One of his trials was that at the age of 22 he was called to be bishop for the church. A bishop is someone who oversees the people in the church in a certain area. During his time as bishop he had 85 widows in his ward. During this time he made time to go and visit them. He also promised to go to each of their funerals and to this day he has made it to all of their funerals. Another one of his trials was that he had to go and live in Canada with his wife and children. He was called to be a mission president. A mission president is someone who is unpaid but is in the church and goes and helps young missionaries who are out on their missions. This was also a big trial for him because he had never lived outside of Utah in his life. Another trial was that he had to go away from his family for long amounts of time to fulfill his calling in the church. These are just some of the many trials that President Monson has gone through in his life.

| Anne Frank The Diary Of A Young Girl | One of Anne Frank's accomplishments is how she had the ability to write. Anne Frank was very sensitive therefor was able to sense the feelings of others and write them. I consider this to be an accomplishment because she was able to write about her day to day life during the war in hiding. This is also accomplishment because people read her diary giving therm a sense of what she went through during hiding. Anne Franks greatest struggle was the two years of survival and hiding from the Nazis.Unfortunately she was captured and brought to a concentration camp. when the war ended Anne Frank's father returned to Amsterdam where he was able to get her diary that was at the secret hiding spot. He then went on to make Anne Frank's story known by publishing her book. | |
| NON-FICTION - Biography/Autobiography | In the book, Stick Figure, by Lori Gottlieb the main character Lori had greatest accomplishment was conquering anorexia nervosa. To begin, In the book Lori had grownup thinking she could always be skinny and maybe her peers would have more of an interest in her if she were thinner. Throughout her childhood she was always looking for ways to eat healthier or things she could do to shed weight. At one point her anorexia had become so serious she thought that if she inhaled and unhealthy food she could gain weight. Eventually Lori had been put into the hospital but after a lot of rehab Lori realized how starving herself wasn't making her thinner it was making her unhealthy. This later lead to her getting back on track and eating once again. I think this was a great accomplishment for Lori because if she had continued to starve her body she could have a chance of not living or becoming very weak.
During Lori's anorexia she had encountered some struggles before succeeding. One of the biggest struggles for Lori is that her relationship with her family had been weakening, and that having all her friends and family around her tell her she was gorgeous and skinny was only making her starve herself more. One example of Lori growing apart from her family is, that during her rehab and time at therapy she had talked about how her family had been giving up on her and how they kept getting more and more frustrated with her. This had later resulted in her family signing her into a hospital for help. Next, an example of how compliments only made her more unhealthy is the more people told her she was looking great the more Lori thought that what she was doing to herself was working. She had also thought if people thought she looked good then, she started thinking how awesome they would think she would when she was even thinner.

| Ana's Story by Jenna Bush | In the book Ana’s Story, by Jenna Bush, Ana’s biggest accomplishment is having a healthy baby. Because Ana has struggled with HIV her whole life, Ana was very worried when she realized that she was pregnant. There was a large chance that her baby would be born with HIV as well. This chance had been multiplied by the baby’s dad also having HIV. When Ana delivered a healthy baby, she felt that her life of abuse and struggle with her disease had gotten much brighter.
Ana faced many struggles before she had her healthy, miracle baby. Being born with HIV started her life off badly. She was raised in a family where her mother, father, and one of her sisters struggled with HIV. One of her sisters actually died at the age of three months, and her mother died a few years after. When her father could not take care of Ana and her sister, she was sent, with her sister, to live with her abuela. A struggle that Ana faced while living at her abuela’s house, was that her abuela’s boyfriend liked to touch Ana and her sister inappropriately. This was very hard on Ana because she felt that she was supposed to protect her sister from him better. When Ana tried to run away, she was sent to a home for juvenile delinquents. Here she faced troubles with being alone and not being with anyone who knew about her disease. All of these events led to the brightest moments of Ana’s life, the birth of her healthy baby girl.

| The Brothers Grimm: Two Lives, One Legacy by Donald R. Hettinga | In "The Brothers Grimm: Two Lives, One Legacy", by Donald R. Hettinga, the two brothers Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm had many accomplishments, but one stood above the others. This specific accomplishment was the creation of "Kinder- und Hausmarchen", or "Household Tales". This volume would be their greatest achievement because of all the work that went into it, without either of them being absolutely certain that they would be appreciated for their efforts. They didn't know at the time that their collection of fairy tales would be spread across the globe for generations. I consider their volume of tales to be both of their greatest achievement because later volumes were written with money that they earned from the first book, so without it none of their future works would have come into existence. The two close brothers were doing what they wanted to for a living, and they were admired for it for hundreds of years.
Although they had great success in their lives, the Brothers Grimm had to go through many difficulties in order to gain success. One such difficulty was when France tried to take over Europe under Napoleon. The brothers' village had been conquered, so they were forced to work in the library of the castle the French now owned. They overcame this obstacle when the Russians freed the Germans from French control. A final obstacle the brothers had to deal with was Wilhelm's illnesses. Wilhelm had many troubles with his heart and was also prone to many other diseases like pneumonia. His illnesses prevented the brothers from working because they were so close to each other that it was extremely hard for them to work apart. This obstacle really never was overcome but both brothers lived with it and it became only a minor problem in their writing. In all, the Brothers Grimm had to overcome many difficulties before getting their first volume of "Household Tales" published.

| Lyndon Johnson and the American Dream- Andrew Rose | Asking what the greatest accomplishment of Lyndon Johnson's presidency is like asking which grain of sand on a beach is the best. Johnson created Medicare and Medicaid, pushed the 1965 Voting Rights Act through congress, guaranteeing every adult the right to vote, and started the "War on Poverty," which cut the poverty rate in half. Johnson's greatest accomplishment however, was the 1964 Civil Rights Act, which ended segregregation in public places. What made this accomplishment all the more impressive is that Johnson, for all his reputation as a master politician, knew that ending segregation would ruin his party in the south for decades. In fact, as he signed the bll he remarked that "we have just lost the south for a generation." This convinces me that this was his greatest accomplishment not only for the equality it promoted, but for the idea that a politician would sign a bill that would ruin his party's electoral fortunes. A politician doing whats right despite political repercussions! Can you imagine that? | |

| David ortiz by David Ortiz | Ortiz has had many great accomplishments in his lifetime. His greatest accomplishment was getting signed by the Seatle Mariners of the MLB as a teenager. He had worked very hard to finally get noticed by a professional team. Coming from the very competitive Dominican Republic, this was no easy task to complete. Although he had many accomplishments, he also had some bad things happen to him. The worst thing that happened to him was when he was cut by the Minnesota Twins. He was out of a job and had no way to support his family and needed to catch the attention of another MLB team fast. Luckily for him, the Boston Red Sox liked what they saw in him and decided to pick him up. | |
