Welcome to my 2011-2012 Science class

Remember, if you don't have your homework completed by the designated date, you get one more day to show your work for 50% credit but if you don't have it on the second day = you stay after school on that day! [You have already received your 24 hour notice when you didn't complete your homework on time.]

 Science Class

W 2/1 CW: We discussed the results of our  Reasons for the Seasons activity that we finished yesterday. Then we credited WW # 70-84 which was originally due on Monday. I am very disappointed at the number of students who did not have their work completed!

HW:  Reasons for the Seasons activity ANALYZE on pg. 15 Q's 1-5 only. Put the answers intoyour sci notebook with your activity.

T 1/31: STARTER: Get your sci notebook and glue in your Reasons for the Seasons Activity sheet. Credited RAG Earth in Space pgs. 10-13. CW: Completed the Reasons for the Seasons activity up to the Analyze portion. We will continue tomorrow. We are trying to figure out the other two reasons for the seasons.

M 1/30 CW: STARTER: 1. Using your NECAP Reference sheet, answer the following questions after your Earth in Space notes: REVOLUTION- *Which planet has the longest "year"? How much longer is it than Earth's year? *Which planet has the shortest "year"? How many Earth days is it? ROTATION- *Which planet has a "day" that is closest to Earth's day? *Which planet has the shortest day? How many Earth hours is it?

We discussed and used visual aids to understand the previous questions. Then we turned to our reading from last night and the illustration that was a copy of the Seasons on p. 11. We started to examine the FOUR REASONS for the SEASONS. #1. Tilt of the Earth's axis. #2. Amount of daylight hours. #3 & #4 will be determined tomorrow in our activity.

FAST THIS WEEK [M 1/30 - TH 2/2]: We are catching up on all of the Constructed Responses that have not been REDONE as required or completed at all. Students also have the opportunity to review their Density Cube Constructed Response before handing it in. All previously missing or incomplete Constructed Response work needs to be handed in by the end of this week or students will be staying after school to get the work done. Remember, this is not only a way to perfect your science writing skills but a review of science content from the last 4 years in preparation for your NECAP experience in May.

F 1/27 CW: We credited Earth in Space  pgs. 6-9 and talked about revolution and rotation. Additional words on the WW are leap year and daylight savings time. then Mrs. Fletcher informed everyione of the new Honors biology course offered for 9th graders. She outlined the differences between the two biology courses and the physical science/earth science course. Students will be receiving their recommendations in LA class on Monday. There is an incoming 9th grade parent informational meeting on Tuesday night at the HS.

HW: RAG Earth in Space pgs. 10-13 with fig 5 on pg. 11 [both illustrations] & WW #70-84

Th 1/26 CW: STARTER- p. 19 Q 1.c. & 2.b. and additional question: What would happen to Earth's motion if the gravitational force from the Sun suddenly stopped? Then we credited RAG Gravity and Motion, reviewed the answers to the starter questions, and then we talked about the next section we are discussing. The next section for HW with the illustrations to be included and the timeline students are creating is from 1500 BC to present day. We will be adding to this timeline over the next 6-8 weeks during the time in which we are studying Astronomy.

HW: RAG Earth in Space , pgs. 6-9 w/fig 2 & 3 and complete layout of the HISTORY OF ASTRONOMY timeline and insert information from the reading.

W 1/25 CW: Students emptied their 2nd section into a file folder provided by Mrs. Fletcher who will be hanging onto their Motion, Forces, Energy, and Electricity notes from the first half of the year. We talked about the two illustrations [fig 7 & 9] that need to be put into the RAG of Gravity and Motion, pgs. 16-19.

HW: Finish RAG Gravity and Motion

T 1/24 CW: Today students took a pre-test on Astronomy.

M 1/23: SCIENCE MID-TERM ASSESSMENT

CW: Return Physical Science textbook and receive Astronomy textbook in exchange. Brief outline of work we are going to do in Astronomy.

HW: Cover your Astronomy textbook = DUE FRIDAY
