BMS Spotlight on Learning:

This week we would like to shine our BMS Spotlight on Mrs. Melanie Roy and Dr. Brian Fernandes. Last week Mrs. Roy and Dr. Fernandes hosted our first family book club of the year with nearly 40 individuals (parents and students) who participated in a rich discussion about the book Tight by Torrey Maldonado. In addition, on Friday, Mrs. Roy and our PTO organized an author visit where Torrey Maldonado visited BMS and spoke to our students about respect and choices. Last week was an amazing week. Thank you Mrs. Roy and Dr. Fernandes for building a culture of readers!

BMS Project Based Learning/Deep Learning Coaching Form:

Our goal this year is to refine and expand upon the great projects created over the last two years. Heidi Vazquez, Highlander Coach, will meet with cluster teams in 5 week rotations mostly on Wednesdays. One of the goals of the Lighthouse Grant Program was to share out our innovative practices with others.  Our end of the year product will be a website that contains all the content area projects, interdisciplinary projects, and new United Nations Sustainable Development Goal Projects (planned this year, implemented in 20-21.)

Teachers will continue to implement their content area and interdisciplinary project this year aligned to the Deep Learning Principles (Communication, Collaboration, Creativity, Critical Thinking, Character and Citizenship).  In addition, this year teachers will plan a project aligned to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. If teachers would like to implement this project this year, they may, but it isn't required.

BMS Family Deep Learning/Flexible Space Learning Walk:

At the end of last year, BMS hosted a Family Learning Walk to see Project Based Learning in action. We had 16 parents and family members attend and got a glimpse of the life of a BMS student. This year, we hope to host one visit during each trimester. Our first visit is scheduled for Thursday, November 21, 2019. If you are interested in attending this year’s Family Deep Learning/Flexible Space Learning Walk please complete the below form. We will need to limit it to 20 parents, and it will be a first come, first served basis. This year, we also be videoing the visit as well. Please note, this visit is not to your child’s classroom, but rather to see teaching and learning happening throughout the school.

Torrey Maldonado visit to BMS:

Last week Torrey Maldonado, author of Tight, visited with our BMS students. In addition to speaking about his new book, Torrey spoke to our students about respect for self and others, and making choices. Thank you so much to Mrs. Roy and our PTO for making this event possible. Our students were attentive and seemed to get a lot out of his visit.

Student Resource Officer Wyrostek News:

Drop-off and pick-up of students is prohibited on the side streets off of Lincoln Avenue (ie: Harrison, Peck, Brown or Standish Avenues).  It is a danger to students and drivers to have students crossing in the middle of Lincoln Avenue and these streets are not wide enough to accommodate parked vehicles.  Parking creates a safety hazard as Emergency Vehicles cannot safely access homes on those streets.
