News from Nurse Maddy: As is typical for this time of year, we are seeing an increase in respiratory and intestinal illness at Barrington Middle School. Please encourage frequent hand washing and covering coughs, and also follow our school guidelines for keeping sick children home. The illnesses listed below are currently circulating at school, each with its own tell-tale symptoms. However, there are a lot of overlapping symptoms, likely requiring the expertise of your child’s doctor to determine a diagnosis. As a general rule, your child must be symptom-free (no vomiting, diarrhea or fever) for 24 hours, without the use of medication, to attend school. In addition, if your child’s infection requires antibiotic treatment, they should be on antibiotics for 24 hours before returning to school. Please also consider whether or not your child is energetic enough to engage in class. Keeping a sick child home from school helps prevent the spread of illness in the school community and allows your child time to rest and recuperate. If you need further guidance, please reach out. Stay healthy! Kindly, Nurse Maddy |

This week, we would like to shine our BMS Spotlight on Caleb Simmons, Brayden Normann, Sofia Ossana, Lorelei Turner and Aewyn Turner. These students were recognized at the MLK JR Soul Force event for their entries into the art contest. Red cluster students swept the BMS category with Lorelei and Aewyn Turner taking home 2nd and 3rd place and Sofia Ossana taking home first place for their brilliant collages. Brayden Normann and Caleb Simmons also took home first place in the digital category for their sound bites interview about what Soul Force means to them. We couldn't be more proud of their effort, creativity and work to promote Dr. King's vision of non-violence. (Nominated by Mrs. Bannon) This week, we would like to shine our BMS Spotlight on Krystal Leary. I wanted to nominate Krystal for always being there for the students she supports. She is often a strong team member when working collaboratively with the other support staff members to help wrap around students in need. Thanks for all that you do! (Nominated by a member of our BMS Learning Community) This week, we would like to shine our BMS Spotlight on Mrs. Dion and our BMS Band. This past week, the band played to a packed house filling the auditorium with beautiful sounds. Great work, Mrs. Dion, in preparing and leading our students! Great work to all of the students who participated in our winter band concert. Amazing job! This week, we would like to shine our BMS Spotlight on our BMS Leadership Council Members. Thank you for your hard work and commitment to improving BMS! Thank you for presenting and sharing your schedules for feedback. Your willingness to be vulnerable and seek feedback speaks to your character and leadership. This week, we would like to shine our BMS Spotlight on Melissa Carli. Shout out to Melissa Carli from red cluster for passing 4 MILLION words read so far this school year. She is tearing through our million-word challenge and might be a great person to ask for book recommendations! (Nominated by Mrs. Bannon). Do you know of a BMS Faculty/Staff/Student member who is shining bright? If you do, please complete the form below and we can include the nomination in an upcoming newsletter. |

Barrington Farm School: Food Waste and Hunger: Feeding America estimates that 145 billion meals worth of food goes to landfills each year in the US! At the same time, 48 million people in this country face food insecurity, including 1 in 5 children! Food insecurity and food waste are intimately connected, and the same solutions can help address both issues simultaneously. A widespread network of food pantries, gleaning organizations, food rescue organizations, and other partners are working together to divert food out of the waste stream to feed people in need, impacting both issues simultaneously. Solving the problem is complex, but helping is something we can all do! Look for organizations working at this intersection and find out how you can help.
Even in your own home, you can find ways to use excess food to help your neighbors. Have you ever been unable to resist that buy 1 get 1 free deal even though you didn’t need the free one? or bought a bag of oranges knowing half the bag was likely to go mushy before you could eat them? Maybe you’ve bought your child’s favorite cereal or snack, only to find out they no longer like that kind. Consider donating what you won’t use to your local food pantry or meal site. In addition to packaged foods, many food pantries also accept (and appreciate!) donations of whole, uncut produce, although it’s always a good idea to contact them first to check on their hours and policies.
The East Bay Food Systems Working Group, supported by area HEZs, has developed an online resource to connect both people in need and donors to area food pantries and meal sites. Link here. - Contributed by Barrington Farm School |
